Every holiday season, Washington, DC’s Heurich House Museum hosts its annual Christkindlmarkt. The Heurich family’s German roots get a full-on celebration with this unique local event, which recreates a traditional German public Christmas market in its well appointed garden.
As our own Dupont Circle’s sole outdoor market, Christkindlmarkt at Heurich House makes the neighborhood a good place to stay in December. Travelers can enjoy a central DC location with easy access to some of the most DC-specific holiday gifts nearby. You can find a variety of things at the market including artisan chocolate, jewelry, ceramics, housewares, and works of art.
The 2018 Christkindlmarkt vendors will be announced on October 15th. If this year’s lineup brings back some of last year’s all stars, and maintains its taste for crafty local producers, then shoppers have a lot to look forward to. In 2017, shoppers had an exciting variety of gifts to buy that included homemade craft candles, unique and funny greeting cards, artisanal liquors and wines, cute onesies for babies, and so much more.
Also known as the Christian Heurich Mansion and the Brewmaster’s Castle, The Heurich House Museum is the preserve mansion of Christian Heurich, one of few relics of a bourgeoisie Dupont Circle scene in the early 20th century.
Historic with its architecture and art collection, the house is a common place for travelers to visit on a given day, but it’s especially lively when it comes alive with its Oktoberfest celebration, and the subsequent Christkindlmarket. It’s also conveniently close to St. Gregory Hotel, just a short, five-minute walk away.
Having a holiday market in Dupont Circle is an excellent idea for shoppers, because it means they can pair their shopping experience with any number of restaurants, cultural excursions, or luxurious hotel stays.
Just in this neighborhood, you can set down your shopping bags at a critically-beloved Japanese izakaya, or a high-end tasting Indian tasting menu restaurant. There are also tapas, New American, and good old-fashioned sandwich shops. For tips on where to eat after visiting the 2018 Christkindlmarkt at Heurich House Museum, check out our Neighborhood Guide.
