If you’re looking to pick a family vacation this summer, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better option than commemorating the fourth of July in America’s capital city. Here’s why you’ll love celebrating Independence Day in DC.
Restaurants and bars around town will host Fourth-of-July–themed dinners and celebrations, so make sure to join in for the festivities. Previous events have included an all-you-can-eat hot dog extravaganzas and pig roasts. If you’d rather get your food to go, pick up a picnic basket or charcuterie platter and bring it to your destination of choice.
Enjoy a free concert by well-known musical talents at PBS’ annual Capitol Fourth concert. The yearly event has previously brought musicians from a range of genres, including Reba McEntire and Barry Manilow. You’ll also have the chance to see performances by military marching bands, making this the perfect way to celebrate America’s birthday.
One of the District’s best-loved Fourth of July activities for families is the National Independence Day Parade. Held every year from roughly 11:45 am to 2:00 pm, the parade goes from Constitution Ave and 7th Street up to Constitution Ave and 17th Street, a roughly one-mile walk. You’ll get to see marching bands, drill teams, as well as celebrities and special guests celebrating America’s independence at this fun-filled event.
Every year, Washington’s home team plays an 11am game on Independence Day at National’s Park to ring in Independence Day. This year, the Nats will be up against the Mets, so this game will definitely be one to catch. Enjoy a ballpark dog and take in an early game before you head over to enjoy the rest of the day’s fun.
You can’t miss the incredible fireworks display held in DC to celebrate the country’s independence every year! While you can catch the show from pretty much anywhere in DC, we recommend heading to the Mall for the best view.
